Push For More Liquor licenses

The Boston city leaders are looking to make it easier to open bars and restaurants in the several underserved communities.

Mayor Marty Walsh plans to file a measure with the city on Monday. He said it is about boosting economic development in several communities.

As per the Boston Globe, the expansion of Boston’s liquor licenses will affect the neighborhoods like Mattapan, Roxbury and East Boston. The communities like those would receive five liquor licenses annually over a three-year period.

In all, 152 liquor licenses would be a part of the expansion.

The goal would be to attract the nightlife to the neighborhoods, and it is not the first time there has been an expansion of Boston’s liquor licenses.

According to the Globe, this would build further on the 2014 expansion. That one awarded 75 liquor licenses with the bulk of them restricted to the neighborhoods like Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Mission Hill and Roxbury.

But unlike to that expansion, the current proposal would allow the liquor licenses to remain available to the targeted neighborhoods even after the three-year period ends.

In the year 2014, the law also tried to make liquor licenses more affordable to attract the small business owners.

Walsh said that he is optimistic about attracting the businesses to some of the neighborhoods.
