Museum Doubles Reward For Stolen Artwork

A Boston museum’s reward of $5 million is doubled to $10 million for the information which leads to the return of 13 art works, which were stolen more than two decades ago in the largest art heist in the U.S. history.

On Tuesday, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's board of trustees has announced the increase in reward.

"It is our fervent hope that by increasing the reward, our resolve is clear that we want the safe return of the works to their rightful place and back in public view," said the president of the museum's board, Steve Kidder.

Two men dressed in the uniforms of Boston police have gained entrance to the museum on 18th March, 1990, and told to the security guard at the watch desk that they were responding to the report of a disturbance, according to the authorities.

The guard did not follow the museum policy and allowed both the men into museum. The two museum guards on duty were handcuffed by the thieves and they were put in the separate areas of museum's basement.

The suspects have robbed the museum of about $500 million worth of masterpieces which included the works by Rembrandt, Manet and Vermeer. The FBI told to The Associated Press in the year2015 that the two suspects are deceased.

"Typically stolen masterpieces are either recovered soon after a theft or a generation later. We remain optimistic that these works will ultimately be recovered," said the museum's security director, Anthony Amore.

In the year 1997, the museum has increased the reward from $1 million to $5 million. The new reward of $10 million is available immediately but expires at the midnight of 31st December, 2017.

Amore said that, people with the information of theft should contact the museum directly, and the museum assures complete confidentiality.
